The Wilkie Collins mystery on stage

Dear fellow investigators,

once again this year, for our traditional spring tour, we have chosen to continue along the path we began last year. Back then, challenging convention and temporarily setting aside — we hope only for a short while — Agatha Christie, due to rights acquisition issues in a time when the Queen of Crime is everywhere in the media, we decided to bring The Woman in White to the stage.

The Woman in White, one of the earliest mystery novels in literary history, proved to be a major challenge for us: a complex 19th-century work, rich in scene changes, requiring period costumes and carrying a tone very different from the 20th-century comedies of Agatha Christie. It was a beautiful and exciting challenge, met with a truly excellent audience response, and one that also led us to perform for the first time on the stage of a new theatre: the Teatro della Rosa in Pontremoli, which welcomed us through its wonderful doors.

This year, we could have chosen a safer path. But we didn’t.

Andso, The Moonstone, translated by our tireless president Andrea Mosti and vice president Davide Bennati, arrives on stage. Recognized as the first great detective novel in Western literature, it features a rich and compelling plot — reworked by Wilkie Collins himself for the theatrical version — and a cast of decidedly unconventional characters.

The work is demanding, the commitment is great, but we are confident that with this production we will pay tribute to the mystery genre, as we have always strived to do as an association over many years.

And let’s be honest: could Gioca Mistero really pass up the opportunity to play with such an important “mystery”?
